You know them. Perhaps not personally, but you’ve seen their faces at league games and within your community. They give their time and energy to youth sports with unfaltering dedication, whether they have any children of their own or not.
While youth sports volunteers may always seem to be obscured in the background, they are not invisible—at least not to the kids. In fact, their tireless efforts become readily apparent when your son or daughter catches a fly ball to tie up the game, or spikes the volleyball to score the winning point. While parents were busy working, these volunteers were busy working with their kids to make that kind of magic happen. Always lending a word of encouragement, a shoulder to lean on, or a ride to the game when needed, volunteers are anything but background material; they’re the backbone of every league.
Whether you’re a coach or a parent, it’s important to take the time to recognize the volunteers who generously give of themselves to your community and its youth. A simple pat on the back might be enough for the typical person who makes this kind of sacrifice without expecting anything in return, but you could do more. In fact, we have some ideas to help you show--not just tell--your volunteers how much they’re appreciated.
Don’t overlook the power of the written word. These days, written letters and thank you notes have nearly become a lost art. Revive a tradition and freely express your gratitude by sending a personal handwritten note to each volunteer that worked with your child’s league. We guarantee that the gesture will not only be appreciated, but your kinds words will become a keepsake.
Make it personal. Does your volunteer enjoy a particular cuisine or a good book? Consider presenting them with a gift certificate for lunch at a local eatery or the purchase of the latest best-selling novel.
Reward with an award. Get together with other coaches and parents to collectively arrange for a small plaque to be made to honor each volunteer. What better opportunity is there to present them than during the next big game?
Show your thanks with a nifty novelty gift. A ‘Thanks for Volunteering’ chocolate bar, a volunteer angel pin, or a specialized license plate cover would bring a smile to anyone’s face. If you need some more
ideas along this line and for ease of ordering online, check out the selection of Gifts for Volunteer Appreciation Week from Promos On-Time.
Of course, you don’t have to wait for a designated week to roll around on the calendar to show your appreciation to the volunteers in your life. Remember to extend a hand in thanks throughout the season to the hands that give so freely all year long.
