The city council of Washington, North Carolina, is considering adopting an ordinance to ban the use of smokeless tobacco products at all public facilities that host youth recreational programs and activities. This would include facilities located on city property as
well as those leased by the city.
Currently, there is a law in effect which prohibits smoking in public buildings, but the council is in doubt as to whether the law can be applied to smokeless tobacco products at public facilities, including recreational grounds. By adopting the new ordinance, council members are confident that all bases will be covered and help to send an appropriate message to youth about the hazards of tobacco use.
