COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (April 22, 2008) – USA Volleyball has announced the 19-player rosters for the 2008 U.S. Men’s Junior and Boys’ Youth national training teams. It has also announced the players who will participate in the 2008 USAV High Performance Select A1 Camp and Competition.
The 2008 U.S. Men’s Junior National Training Team (players born in 1989 or ’90) will practice at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif., beginning in mid-June. The team will be cut to a final squad of 12 athletes, who will compete in the NORCECA Under-21 Continental Championship, scheduled for June 30-July 5 in El Salvador.
The NORCECA championship is a qualifier for the 2009 FIVB Men’s Junior World Championship. The U.S. Men’s Junior National Team has qualified for the last two world championships.
The men’s junior team will be coached by Shawn Patchell, the head coach of the BYU men’s volleyball team. Patchell was an assistant coach last year for the U.S. Boys’ Youth National Team.
The assistant coaches will be Craig Dyer, an assistant coach for Penn State University’s men’s volleyball team, and Dan Friend, the head coach of the men’s volleyball team at Lewis University.
Included on Men’s Junior National Training Team are several players from the team that competed at the 2007 FIVB Boys’ Youth World Championship in Mexico. Among those are libero Erik Shoji (Honolulu, Hawaii), who was named best libero and best defender at those World Championships.
Other players from the 2007 boys’ youth squad are outside hitter Tri Bourne (Honolulu, Hawai’i), middle blocker Austin D’Amore (Laguna Hills, Calif.), middle blocker Austin “Gus” Ellis (Corona del Mar, Calif.), outside hitter Kyle Friend (Boca Raton, Fla.), middle blocker Tyler Jaynes (Granite Bay, Calif.), setter Joseph Kauliakamoa, Jr. (Las Vegas, Nev.), outside hitter Brad Lawson (Honolulu, Hawai’i) and outside hitter Murphy Troy (St. Louis, Mo.).
The 2008 U.S. Boys’ Youth National Training Team (players born in 1991 or ’92) will practice at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., beginning in mid-July. The team will be cut to a final squad of 12 athletes, who will participate in the NORCECA Boys’ Youth Continental Championship, which will be in the United States.
The NORCECA Championship is a qualifier for the 2009 FIVB Boys’ Youth World Championship. The U.S. Boys’ Youth National Team has qualified for the last two world championships.
The team’s head coach will be Andy Read, who is an assistant coach with the Long Beach State men’s volleyball team. Read coached the U.S. Men’s Junior National Team in 2006-07 and the U.S. Boys’ Youth National Team in 2004-05.
Read will be assisted by Sean Byron, an assistant coach for The Ohio State University men’s volleyball team, and John Hawks, an assistant coach with the University of Southern California’s men’s volleyball team and an assistant coach for the 2007 U.S. World University Games men’s volleyball team.
The 2008 USA Boys’ Select A1 Camp and Competition consists of 40 athletes and eight coaches who will fly to Tucson, Ariz., on July 17, train for five days, then break into four teams and compete in the U.S. High Performance Championship, which runs through July 27.
The head coach of the Boy’s Select A1 program will be Charlie Sullivan, head coach of the men’s volleyball team at Springfield College. His assistants will be Ken Shibuya (Stanford University), Shane Davis (Loyola University of Chicago), Travis Turner (Orange Coast College), JT Wenger (UCLA), Brad Keller (USC), Jonah Carson (UC Santa Cruz) and Matt Diaz (Pacific Palisades Volleyball Club).
